Originally built for a Royal Navy Admiral, our clients had a vision to enhance the connection between the house and its carefully landscaped gardens, seeking to create a well detailed and sensitive addition to a historically significant Georgian home. The scheme's concept sought to reflect this approach through an elegant fusion of contemporary design and traditional architecture. A material palette of red brick, dark aluminium and cedar cladding is composed across a sympathetically modern form that references key elements of the existing dwelling. Corner sliding doors sit below a cantilevering canopy to create a seamless transition between internal and external space. The site's tight constraints and listed status meant that the provision for further glazing was limited, hence the inclusion of carefully spaced skylights that draw natural light deeper in to the floor plan.

The existing building is bordered by a historic brick wall that forms an integral part of Emsworth's street scene. Our proposed structure was nestled inside this envelope, occupying a void on the site that was previously occupied by a dilapidated conservatory. Carefully considered interventions, from hidden doors to natural light wells, have been used throughout the extension and refurbishment works to enhance the appearance and flow of movement through the property, concluding with a view of the tiered gardens that sit right on the edge of Chichester Harbour.
