The contemporary design replaces a dilapidated house with a similar footprint and silhouette. We worked very closely with Havant Borough Council and Chichester Harbour Conservancy, not only to obtain planning permission but to create a beautiful building that responds to the area and sensitivity surrounding the Conservation Area.
The brief from the clients was a contemporary, maintenance free, family home. The design concept is simple; a large brick wall protects the house from the elements, acting like a modern sea defence. The material choice for this wall was crucial to not only blend into the context of the harbour, but also contrast against the main house. This feature wall has a random bond and dark mortar to make it organic and have a man-made tactile quality.

To the rear of the site, the design is more creative with materials, cantilevers, landscaping and responds to the idea of ‘entrance’ with different forms, drawing the residents into the house. Once inside, the view reveals itself with framed vistas through the wall across the harbour.
