The Harbour House

The Harbour House is a private, bespoke, new build dwelling located within the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The clients approached us with the intention of creating a unique life-time home that would meet the needs of their active family lifestyle.

The site’s setting on the periphery of the Nutbourne Channel presented an exciting design challenge to carefully integrate contemporary design within a sensitive and idyllic waterside setting whilst overcoming local flood risks.

Both Chichester District Council and the Chichester Harbour Conservancy were consulted at a very early stage to aid the design development and ensure that the fantastic views towards Chichester Harbour could be captured effectively. We were appointed through all of the RIBA Work Stages, allowing us to develop a concept that split the floor plan into two components with a glazed void centrally.

The roof form consists of wings with integrated clerestory glazing which allows natural light deep into the floor plan, whilst the use of a ground source heat pump contributes to the dwelling’s sustainable credentials. Dark and muted materials such as stone and standing seam zinc cladding reduce the proposal’s visual impact from the harbour and are also featured on two smaller outbuildings which contain a pool and gym respectively.
