Birdham Fruit Farm - Chichester
The clients approached Helyer Davies Architects after purchasing Birdham Fruit Farm near Chichester. Set within the rural landscape of West Sussex, the plot consisted of a small dwelling that the clients wished to replace with a more substantial, barn style family home.
Working closely with Chichester District Council, we developed a proposal that remained modest in height but took advantage of vaulted spaces at first floor level to create a concealed first floor. The roof form is symmetrical in nature, with a series of projections forming two gables acting as bookends on either side of a centralised balcony serving the master bedroom.
We were appointed through all RIBA Work Stages, allowing us to identify the importance of materiality early on given the open nature of the surrounding landscape. A palette of flint and blackened timber was split across the various forms, whilst oak framework highlighted key architectural features such as the walk out balcony that doubles up as a porch to those entering the dwelling below.
